Plan clarity
Claude Pro vs Max: Which Plan Do You Need for This Course?
Lessons 1–5 work on Free. For the full hands-on course, plan on Pro from Lesson 6 until you finish. Without it, you can read the lessons but must skip paid-feature exercises. Max is not needed.

The direct answer
Claude Pro is the practical plan for the intended hands-on course experience. You do not need Max. Lessons 1–5 use Claude Chat and work with a free Claude account. From Lesson 6 onward, the course moves into Cowork and then Code, and many of those exercises rely on features Anthropic currently limits to paid plans.
If you do not have a paid Claude plan, you can still read the purchased lessons and follow the provided concept-only skip paths. But you will not be able to perform much of the practical work yourself. Reading the course while skipping the exercises is not the same as completing its full hands-on path.
Free vs Pro vs Max
| Plan | What changes in the course | Course recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Complete the Introduction and Chat section hands-on. In Lessons 6–24, read the instruction and use concept-only skip paths when your account does not include the demonstrated feature. | Use Free for Lessons 1–5. It is not the full practical experience for the Cowork and Code sections. |
| Pro | Perform the hands-on Cowork and Code exercises, subject to Anthropic’s current feature availability and usage limits. | The recommended plan for Lessons 6–24 if you want to do the course as designed. Pro is sufficient; you do not need to upgrade to Max. |
| Max | It generally adds capacity for longer or more frequent Claude use. No lesson requires that extra capacity. | Do not buy Max solely for the course. Consider it only if substantial work outside the curriculum repeatedly exceeds Pro’s limits. |
Course access and tool access are separate
Purchasing the course unlocks its paid lesson content. A Claude subscription is a separate purchase from Anthropic, and it is not included with the course. The course purchase lets you read Lessons 6–24; a paid Claude plan gives you access to the tools needed to perform many of their exercises.
There is no single combined first-month price. Your subscription cost depends on Anthropic’s current price and how long you take to work through the hands-on portion. That is why the course does not add one month of Pro to its advertised price.
When to start Pro
Do not start a paid plan merely because you are considering the course. A sensible sequence is:
- Use a free Claude account for Lesson 1 and Lessons 2–5.
- Upgrade shortly before you begin Lesson 6 if you want to do the Cowork and Code exercises.
- Keep Pro for the period in which you work through Lessons 6–24.
- After finishing, cancel or continue based on whether Claude is useful in your real work.
Plans, features, limits, availability, and prices can change. Confirm the current details on Anthropic’s official pricing page before subscribing. If you already have another paid Claude plan that includes the taught features, you do not also need Pro.
Why Max is not a course recommendation
Max is designed for people who need more Claude capacity. The curriculum does not require that capacity, and Max does not contain a more complete version of the course. If you eventually use Claude heavily for valuable work beyond the lessons and repeatedly reach the limits of a lower plan, you can evaluate Max then. There is no course-only reason to start there.
What you can still do on Free
You cannot complete the full hands-on path on Free while Cowork and Code features remain restricted to paid plans. You can still use every purchased lesson as a learning resource:
- Perform the Chat exercises that are available in your free Claude account.
- For a restricted feature, read the explanation and study the demonstrated workflow.
- Use the lesson’s concept-only skip path to learn the decision-making and review principles.
- Bookmark the skipped exercises so you can return to them if you later activate a paid plan.
This lets you learn the concepts, vocabulary, examples, and safety guidance, but it deliberately gives up the repetition and muscle memory that make the course practical.
Common questions
Choose the workflow before choosing a larger plan
If you are not yet sure what the Cowork and Code sections involve, read the plain-English surface comparison first. If you are worried about file access or permissions, read the non-programmer safety guide. These will show you why hands-on access matters before you decide when to start Pro.
